Athletic Therapy

Is athletic therapy the right pick for me?

Athletic Therapy focuses on the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation, of musculoskeletal injuries/conditions that affect the muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones, nerves, and joints of the body.

Musculoskeletal injuries can be sustained by individuals of all ages during their activities of daily living, sports, or occupations.  Everyone, not just athletes, at some point throughout their day are active whether it is holding a baby, running for the bus, or performing heavy lifting at work. With all these activities there is a chance for injury, especially when performed incorrectly. Athletic Therapists treat a wide range of patients and activity levels from kids with an ankle sprain sustained during soccer to seniors recovering from hip replacement surgery. If you are seeking improvement in your athletic performance, or are recovering from an injury caused by work, daily activities, or sports, then Athletic Therapy is for you.

Athletic therapy can help you recover from an injury by conducting a thorough assessment of your injury to determine the underlying cause and severity of your symptoms. They will also assess your overall physical health and fitness to determine the best course of treatment.

During a treatment session, the Athletic Therapists will use various manual therapy techniques such as massage, soft tissue release, passive range of motion, stretching, traction, and mobilizations. These techniques are used to improve mobility, reduce pain, and increase range of motion and flexibility.

Another focus of treatment is exercise prescription. The athletic therapist will provide a rehabilitation program that is designed specifically for you, to help you recover as quickly as possible to help you return to your previous level of physical activity. This may include a combination of home exercises, stretches, and activities to improve and restore your strength, range of motion, flexibility, speed, balance, and coordination. Your athletic therapist will also work with you to help you understand your body’s biomechanics, and effective conditioning to help prevent future injuries and optimise physical performance.
